Some say Audubon is for the birds…and it is. For the birds, the beasts, the flowers, the trees, the grass, and for all those things that make this a healthier, more habitable world for people. A bi-monthly publication, Audubon was a staunch advocate for respecting the fragile balance and beauty of our ecosystem. Its design format sought to echo the simplicity and urgency of the subject at hand. Compared with today's blogosphere, articles were thoroughly edited, copyedited, fact-checked and proofread before going to press. Audubon was an early adopter of digital make-up and the use of stochastic printing. In the three years I worked there as Associate Design Director, the magazine won three consecutive National Magazine Awards from the Columbia School of Journalism. This work was done in collaboration with Design Director, Dan McClain.
