Worldwide, over 4 million fans tune in daily on TV, radio and the web for this award-winning, independent news show hosted by journalists Amy Goodman and Juan Gonzalez. Being funded entirely through contributions from listeners, viewers and foundations allows Democracy Now! to maintain editorial independence. Our goal was to expand the show’s audience — over 100,000 active Facebook fans, 30,000 committed Twitter followers and 70,000 daily email subscribers via a strategic online campaign. The project team consisting of me, Sinead McDevitt, Polly Ng and Maria Ines Veiga was charged with motivating current fans to spread the word, while at the same time sparking interest in potential advocates. My discrete involvement was with campaign strategy, editorial direction and web development. The project was completed during a summer residency at the School of Visual Arts’ Impact: Design for Social Change program.
